The College Survey Scam

College students are a population that can reliably be characterized as “poor” and “constantly in need of money”; I am no exception. While this is unfortunate enough in itself, even worse are the existence of scams designed to prey off this demographic. I got an email today from a “James Scott” (very likely a fake name) from UniversitySurvey.org, claiming to offer summer part-time work for college students:

Our market research program offers competitive payment for participants in
simple on-line surveys and evaluations. Our Internet-based program is designed
as a part-time job with a flexible schedule.

Sounds innocuous enough in itself. But if you actually go to the website, you’ll find that the direction of money flow isn’t as expected: first you have to sign up for their program and pay a $29.99 fee. This should send up a red flag for any individual with half a brain. Indeed, a quick inspection of the email headers reveals some questionable tidbits.

Received: from 85-130-2-78.2073232469.ddns.cablebg.net ([85.130.2.78] helo=ee)
by luna.superhosting.bg with esmtpa (Exim 4.69)
(envelope-from <j.scott@universitysurvey.org>)
id 1OSdhB-0000Mh-42

The email was sent from some Bulgarian cable ISP. If you do an nslookup on the UniversitySurvey.org domain, you’ll find that its address (91.196.124.22) is registered to a Bulgarian webhost.

If you plug that IP address into whois, you’ll find that this domain is registered in Bulgaria. Maybe this James Scott guy is some clever American entrepreneur who’s decided to set up shop in southeastern Europe. More likely, it’s just a lowlife, unemployed Slavic scumbag looking to get rich (like that will ever happen).

If I didn’t have better things to do (and if I could actually speak Bulgarian), I’d be giving that ISP (and the scam’s payment processing company) a nice long call. Ah well…just don’t fall for it!

P.S.: On the website they list a US contact address: “10685-B Hazelhurst Dr., Houston, Texas 77043 US”. In any case, this is still highly suspect…

P.S. 2: They also claim to have 24/7 customer support. Wouldn’t hurt to shoot ‘em a message and see just how fake they are.

thanks for the post. i got the email from the same guy today. the website is a total scam! watch out, people!

Thanks for clearing it up! I got this same e-mail today and was very concerned about its legitimacy.Glad i researched it!

Anonymous said...

thanks! I almost paid the 30 dollars! Thank god I decided to google it first.

In gmail maps 10685-B Hazelhurst Dr., Houston, Texas 77043 US looks like a warehouse. In any case there are companies working there and university surveys does not appear. The fact that they do not reveal their US corporate identity is suspicious as well.

I got one from the same guy but at collegesurveys10.info. here is the email:
Dear Student,

We are looking for college students for our summer online market research program.

This is a part-time job position which offers a competitive pay, and allows you to set your own schedule. You will be asked to provide your opinions and feedback on a variety of topics including the quality, packaging, style, usability, and overall appeal of a number of different types of products and services. This in turn will benefit the companies that create or manufacture these items. The program is web-based and can be done from anywhere and at anytime.

If you are interested, please email me back soon, as positions are limited.

Sincerely,
James Scott

Be careful out there!

is it bad if i responded to the email but didnt pay the money?

Anonymous said...

yea, i got an email from the same guy. He also sent me two more wanting me to join and even sending me a discount code for the membership fee! What a scam!!

Anonymous said...

He is a Douchebag.Don't trust any kind of message like that.Unless otherwise you know the company in person.

SM said...

Yeah, I had my suspicions when I got the e-mail. Like my father says "There's nothing more real than the money you earn with your own hard work and sweat"

so true!!!!

Anonymous said...

I just got the email today and replied to James Scott saying I was interested in learning more. There was no “call to action” in the first email…it didn’t tell me where to go or how to sign up. A very big sign that this isn’t professional.

Anyway, after seeing the ‘joining fee’ and then reading the testimonials, I looked it up as a scam online. Did anyone read the last four testimonials? They are the same…I’m sorry but Americans don’t typically say "boy am I glad I did” and “boy am I glad I stuck with it”. AVOID

Anonymous said...

I got the same message too good to be true...I’m glad that I research it.

Anonymous said...

I fell for it! I paid ten dollars, but what I am more worried about is if I need to change my credit card.. I am not 100% sure of what other information I had to give...What should I do?

Unknown said...

Dude, change your card. save yourself a lot of hassle.

But I almost fell for it too. Then I decided to be smart and google. I've checked a lot of reviews and thy all say the same thing.

Anonymous said...

Thank god I found your article. I've read 10 before this that said it was a waste of time but not a scam. I almost fell for it because it's only $10 too. Thank you soo much!

It sounds almost the same as one described in your blog. The man's e-mail address is recruit@university-jobs10.info. I think this e-mail is also a fake one.

Yet another grateful person's response. Appreciate your taking the time and making it your business to save other people's broke, naive *$&es. =)

I had the same thing... except mine was from Ann Brown.

Anonymous said...

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

I also received one just like this from Ann Brown. I was so close to e-mailing back. Good thing I didn't. And actually, I've heard of people using out of the country hosts/isps. They could be very well in the US. It sucks that there are so many scams like this.

Tess said...

Wow. it's extraordinary that the two options for the likely perpetrator are A) a clever American, or B)a "lowlife, unemployed Slavic scumbag looking to get rich"
... because an American looking to get rich couldn't possibly be any of the above.
Otherwise, good article; but I'd be more worried about improving your international relations.

that's the e-mail addy they sent mine from just wanted to put it up because so far doing a search on it with google gives up nothing (except the whois info and you would have to be at least a little computer savvy to realize its a scam by looking at it). Also anyone know how these people are getting college e-mail addresses? I don't use my e-mail address for anything except school related busniess so I'm a little worried about that.

As mentioned above by someone, I'm glad I "GOOGLE'D" it to get this page :P

How did they get the school edu addresses....

OK, so this was just weird.

Almost surreal. Like I couldn't make it up if I even tried.

==> HINT: The good part starts somewhere around the 2 minute mark.

Pretty cool stuff huh?

I'm all for my fellow marketers 'raising the bar', more power to them but the part where *I* have to work that much harder just to keep up? Not so cool.

Here's the skinny.

A huge part of IM's appeal is the fact that you have total freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want. But behind it all, there's a lot of hard work involved, right?

Heck, I work! in my pajamas all the time but sometimes it's from dusk to dawn, and don't get me started on the sheer amount of new money-making fads out there.

Talk about information overload!

So apparently this crazy Malaysian dude has cracked the system yet again, generating $12,614 on vacation halfway around the world on a fresh site under 29 days .

Best part? He barely spent an hour a day on the site.

Someone please take my money!

Seriously though, a couple of hater types expressed concern that there might be ... dare I say ... SHENANIGANS involved in Peng Joon's little enterprise ( I was too, at first) but Peng Joon actually DOES this in the video ...not just talk about it.

So you're getting REAL WORLD tips a! nd techniques ...not just theory.

I'm the worst person in the world at traffic stuff and all that Panda/Penguin crap and this was super easy to understand.

There's also all kinds of ninja-level non-SEO stuff too if that's what you're going for.

But enough jibber-jabber

==> Watch it for yourself here

Tess

P.S. PJ does a LOT more than just sell "Marketing" stuff online. He's also a public speaker and a Clickbank Premier Vendor, some weird title Clickbank gives to their top 100 earners.

Almost all of his strategies are free as well so that's doubly cool.

==> Check out the video here

P.P.S. PJ is offering a HUGE bonus with WFNH... I promised to keep my lips sealed but here's what I can say - it's CRAYZEE.

Wow the first article was June 2010 and now October 2012 the scam email is still circulating. Amazing. I am guessing that it must work for them or they wouldn't still be doing it. Still using same US address in Texas.

Anonymous said...

That address in Texas is for a U.S. mail box service (like Mail Boxes Etc and the UPS store). They provide postal services for businesses and individuals. I have a postal box there, that's how I know. It's a legitimate address, but this "University Survey" could still be a scam. If you feel like you have scammed, report it to the police. All mail service providers are required to keep records of their customer's true identity. I had to provide two forms of identification (passport and driver's license) to set up mine.

Hope that helps.

Dear Student,
The scam email is still circulating. This is the New Chain Letter:
Types of chain letters. First type is of no actual danger to anyone and involves no financial investments,

still they can be very annoying! we can safely say that 99.9 percent of all chain letters are scams.
The chain letter is like a sort of living creature. It must continually take in fresh meat to keep going.

Just as in any ecosystem, however, there’s never an unlimited supply of food for the chain letter, so eventually it dies.
However, before it does, those on top might have already received tons of cash.
http://www.bustathief.com/chain-letters/
chain letters are illegal in some but unethical in all countries of the world if they request money or other

items of value and promise a substantial return to the participants.

How does a chain letter know how many times it's been around the world? They get the letter and sent it

forth to ten of their friends-10 people (1%) will respond and become part of the chain. After this start-up generation

there are now 11 people in the chain and 1,000 mails have been sent.
After the second generation, they have a total of 1,111 people in the chain and a total of 1,111,000 mails have

been sent. Chain letters promise huge returns... Don't let these claims blind you to the fact that chain letters are pure hoaxes.
Even if you thought you could make money, would you want to do it by scamming other people? Usually chain

letters have written up to five people on the list. It could go on for maximum up to the 7th generation, where

the scheme would count a billion people in the pyramid, scheme and you would have sent an astonishing ten thousand million e-mails!

Hi guys. I'm in the UK and getting several e-mails a day from 'Tess Albert' - also a few other names. I never open any of them and delete them as soon as they show up, but I came over here to find out what was actually going on. (BTW I'm not a student although I do use Amazon quite a lot.) This seems to be one of the most proliofic and obvious online scams and I'm astonished that nobody seems to have done anything to shut it down yet.

Oh my goodness, I am laughing so hard right now!
I am not really sure how this person or group found me. I have been receiving trick emails for over a week and it has gone from a kind warning to the subject box saying "where the hell are you?!"

Don't open emails guys, many sends the people a notification that your looking at the email. Sometimes just opening it can have an attached virus.

I was led to believe by someone called Sofia Moore that I am applying for a job with them at SwedishMedical.net. They took my banking information to transfer money to my account then asked me to transfer it back to them via Western Union for a fixed percentage (8%) on every transfer. They used my banking information to generate a wire transfer debt on my behalf for more thna $800,000 US Dollars. Thankfully the bank stopped it on time. Watch out for any money generating schemes

March 2015 and these scams coming from this address is still going on.

Usually Quantum PC Support is who calls me in Australia.

Quanum is a Multi National company with offices in London, Melbourne, and Huston. (yeah I believe in Santa Claus too)

A Google map search for the Huston address gives a single story building which looks like a warehouse, or mechanic's workshop.
Not a multi-story building as described to me, by the phone operator that was trying to convince me to allow him access to my computer via AAMMY, or Teamviewer.
This operator gave a very good impression of Paul Hogan, (the actor that played Mick in the "Crocodile Dundee" movies) tainted with an Indian accent.

A Google web search of the address, gave many businesses with the same postal address.

I believe the only legitimate business that operates at that address is USA2ME, a drop shipping company.

All the other businesses just get their mail forwarded on from there to an overseas, or at-least another US address that they don't want to give out.

A whois search of Quantum PC Support, and every/most of the other businesses web-addresses (including USA2ME) all showed ownership by a person with an Indian name, and often Indian postal address.

I'm not saying that USA2ME is a scammer, but they are certainly handling mail for scammers.

I personally would not trust any business operating from this address.
